Four Islands comprise the National Park: Anacapa, the closest about 12 miles away, then in a westerly string, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel. The coast makes a westerly bend as well, running northwest from approximately Port Hueneme to Carpinteria, then westerly to Point Conception where it turns northerly again, paralleling the islands and creating the Santa Barbara Channel. Excursions depart daily from the Harbor. On the mainland, several unique areas comprise the Channel Islands Harbor and Beach community. In the vicinity of the Harbor, sand dunes still lie undisturbed.  The Harbor, prior to dredging and facilitation was also a collection of dunes. "The Sheik", a silent movie classic, with Rudolf Valentino was filmed there. In the subsequent years numerous Hollywood celebrities built vacation get-a-ways on the beach. One of the most notable was Clark Gable, whose 1930's cottage still stands today.
