Schools in Oxnard and Port Hueneme & the west county
California State University Channel Islands
After decades of effort, local officials were finally successful in establishing a new State University in Ventura County in 2002.The county was the most populous in the state without a University. Now local students are able to obtain a Bachelors degree or pursue graduate studies without leaving the county and this beautiful campus is attracting students from all over. Initially only about 2000 students were in attendance, now over 8000 comprise the student body. Eventually, the University is slated to accommodate 15,000 students.
This campus, opened in August 2002, encompasses 640 acres of land near the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, about 20 minutes north of Malibu off Highway 1. The buildings on the main campus provide 1.2 million gross square feet of space for campus facilities. Right now, the university needs only about half of that space for classrooms, offices and laboratories. Eventually, the university will expand into the remaining space, meanwhile a new library and student union are finished.
With an already under supplied housing and rental market, this new facility marks a turning point in the economic future of western Ventura County. Creating new demand for houses for sale along with other positive attributes here in Ventura County, the future appears bright for real property ownership.
The University has constructed about 900 housing units for faculty and staff, but pressure on housing in the surrounding communities is growing. With Camarillo, to the immediate north, limited in growth potential, Oxnard & Port Hueneme, to the immediate west of the campus, should benefit most.
Established beach area condos in Port Hueneme had appreciated at an all time high in terms of sale prices and rental rates, although with the recent recession, rents have remained strong, but sale prices are down. Southern Oxnard, a sometimes problematic area, has been under redevelopment for years, but now investment opportunities abound and this Real Estate Agent predicts a new era of upward, quality growth in this area.

OXNARD and PORT HUENEME
The City of Oxnard, the largest city in Ventura County is a good example of the California district system. Districts within the state may or may not coincide with municipal borders. Oxnard and Port Hueneme have four primary districts covering some schools in Camarillo and unincorporated areas of the County. Districts commonly overlap some neighborhoods, so it is important to check with the Districts directly. The Rio School District serves the unincorporated community of El Rio, the new RiverPark development and portions of the City of Oxnard.
